Geodesic's Great Circle Supports Linux
Geodesic Systems announced that Great Circle products are now available to Linux users, giving Linux C/ C++ developers the memory management infrastructure necessary to allow them to reduce their application development costs, increase revenue, and enhance customer satisfaction.
Great Circle is a central component of Geodesic's Systems ROI (Resource Optimization Infrastructure). Features in Great Circle for Linux Version 3.1 will include: Remote debugging capabilities; Web-based graphical user interface; automatic correction of memory leaks; memory errors reported with full symbolic stack traces; heap profiling reports; high-performance, non-fragmenting memory allocation; high-performance garbage collection for C/C++ programs. Great Circle will initially support Linux Red Hat 5 on x86 and other Linux distributions with compatible kernels and C libraries.
"Development of robust enterprise applications has been limited by the lack of scalable comprehensive Linux memory management solutions," said Carl Rosenberg, Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing. "Strong customer demand for Geodesic's infrastructure for optimizing systems resources led Geodesic to bring Systems ROI to Linux."
As a total memory management solution, Great Circle provides unique Systems ROI benefits. During development, testing and debugging, it finds leaks without slowing down the application. In the deployment stage, it provides high-performance memory management, while automatically ensuring the application is safe from memory leaks that may have slipped through during testing or are the result of third-party libraries.
"During the testing of Great Circle for Linux, we were extremely pleased to discover that Great Circle brought clear and immediate benefits to Linux programs," added Michael Spertus, Chairman and Chief Technology Officer. "For example, when we tried Great Circle with Enlightenment, the popular Linux window manager, Great Circle immediately identified, reported on, and automatically corrected about 100 memory leaks." APC to Offer UPS Power Management for Linux
American Power Conversion [APC]announced the development of a new suite of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) management products that will offer comprehensive power management support for Linux operating system users.
More than 10 million users currently run the Linux operating system. And International Data Corp. (IDC) released data showing that Linux will grow at a rate of 25 percent over the next four years -- or at least double the expected growth rate for any other operating system. This information helped APC make the decision to enter this market, according to Kevin Brown, APC's software marketing manager.
The company is offering a four-part comprehensive software management strategy for Linux. This package will include:
* Basic power management shutdown software -- provides fundamental data integrity in the event of an extended power outage. APC will make the source code available for this software.
* PowerChute Plus for Linux -- provides complete UPS configuration, control and system shutdown in network environments.
* PowerChute Network Shutdown for Linux -- provides a cost-effective, network-based shutdown solution that reduces installation time and costs in centralized UPS environments.
* Enhanced shutdown support for Apache Web Server on Linux --Shutdown utility for Apache Web Server gives Web administrators the ability to ensure safe, proper application shutdown in the event of an extended power failure.
All solutions except for PowerChute Plus for Linux are due out second quarter of 1999. PowerChute Plus will be released during the third quarter.
APC's UPS software support for Linux will be made available free of charge as a download from their Web site. For more information about these and other APC products, visit their Web site at http//www.apcc.com.
AMI-RAID Announces Tools for Linux
American Megatrends Inc. [AMI] announced that MegaManager, an on-line management utility for drive and RAID management, as well as a new multi-threaded Linux driver are now available for the Red Hat Linux operating system, versions 5.2 and 6.0.
Previously, early Linux users configured AMI RAID controllers using MegaRAID BIOS configuration utility, which is OS independent. With the release of these new tools, users have more flexibility to change existing configurations and perform a variety of operations on the drives and adapters on-line under Linux.
MegaManager runs under Linux to configure and manage MegaRAID-based systems without restarting your system. It works on-line to configure arrays and logical drives, initialize logical drives, access controller parameters, access logical and physical drives, format hard disk drives, and rebuild failed disk drives. Also, MegaManager utilizes check consistency, which verifies redundant data in logical drives and automatically corrects any differences. And, it offers an advanced menu for enclosure management that allows you to select the adapter you wish to configure if one or more MegaRAID host adapters is installed on the system.
Major performance improvements have also been made to the new multi-threaded Linux driver. The new driver will help Linux users to compete effectively in enterprise server markets, as the technology holds the top TPCC benchmarks results in 4-way Xeon servers. The new driver has been tested with a single processor and multi-processor kernels available for Linux (2.0.36 and 2.2.6, respectively).
AMI is one of the first RAID companies to offer complete support for the OS. Currently, they support Linux with the following RAID controllers: MegaRAID Express and MegaRAID Express Plus, low-end RAID cards, and the high-end cards MegaRAID Ultra, MegaRAID Ultra GT, and MegaRAID Ultra2 LVD.
